Despite doubts, Mexico to administer hydroxychloroquine to 20,000

Outpatients will be given low to medium doses for a maximum of seven days

by Mexico News Daily

MEXICO, May 23, 2020 –  The federal Health Ministry will use the anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine to treat 20,000 Covid-19 outpatients despite doubts about its efficacy and the risk of it causing an irregular heartbeat and even death.

The director of the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition told the newspaper Milenio that the health regulatory agency Cofepris has authorized the administration of the drug to patients recovering from Covid-19 in their homes.

José Sifuentes acknowledged that clinical trials have shown that high doses of hydroxychloroquine for a prolonged period of time can cause a range of side effects in Covid-19 patients but emphasized that the drug has been shown to reduce generalized inflammation in people with the disease.

In that context, he stressed that outpatients will be given only low to medium doses for a maximum of seven days starting in the early phase of their illness.

Sifuentes said that all patients receiving treatment with the drug will be closely monitored, explaining that the “careful follow-up” will occur at people’s homes and via telephone and video calls.

He said that 130,000 doses of hydroxychloroquine donated by the Swiss healthcare company Novartis will be distributed to national health institutes, regional hospitals and specialty hospitals, among other facilities. The use of the drug among ambulatory Covid-19 patients will commence next week.

The announcement of the plan came just two days after the World Health Organization (WHO) reiterated that the drug should only be used in closely-monitored clinical trials due to the potential side effects.

Michael Ryan, executive director of the WHO health emergencies program, said that hydroxychloroquine and the similar drug chloroquine have “yet to be found effective in the treatment of Covid-19” or to prevent the disease.

The medical journal The Lancet published a study on Friday that said that there were no benefits to treating Covid-19 with either drug and that their use actually increases the risk of dying for coronavirus patients.

In a study of 96,000 coronavirus patients, 18 percent treated with hydroxychloroquine and 16.4 percent of those treated with chloroquine died. For patients in a control group, the death rate was 9 percent.

Deputy Health Minister Hugo López-Gatell, Mexico’s coronavirus point man, is among a large number of medical professionals who have warned against taking hydroxychloroquine as a preventative measure against Covid-19.

But United States President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly promoted the drug as a Covid-19 treatment, was not dissuaded from using it to try to stave off Covid-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus.

“A lot of good things have come out about the hydroxy,  you’d be surprised about how many people are taking it… before you catch it. …  I happen to be taking it…” he told reporters on Monday.

“Couple of weeks ago, I started taking it because I think it’s good, I’ve heard a lot of good stories. And if it’s not good I’m not going to get hurt by it. It’s been around for 40 years for malaria, for lupus, for other things. I take it, frontline workers take it, a lot of doctors take it …” Trump said.

Mexican-made ventilator ready for coronavirus patients

The US $10,000 machines cost significantly less than those on the market

After a month and a half of development, biomedical engineers at the National Institute of Health Sciences and Nutrition Salvador Zubirán are ready to roll out a new ventilator for the treatment of Covid-19 patients.

The engineers developed the VSZ-20 based on an older Mexican model and consulted with doctors to make sure their new version met needs specific to the treatment of coronavirus patients.

“We needed precision equipment that gives the exact pressure and volume of air we need from the ventilator,” said Guillermo Domínguez Cherit, deputy director of critical medicine at the institute, which is operated by the Ministry of Health.

“Having our own resource, developed in this country, offers the advantage of not having to be looking elsewhere,” said Cherit’s colleague David Kershenobich.

Nearly all the ventilator’s parts were made in Mexico to circumvent the possibility of shortages on the global market in the future.

Engineers tested the ventilators on artificial lungs, as well as healthy pigs and pigs with pneumonia. The VSZ-20 has been approved by the Commission for Protection Against Sanitary Risk (Cofepris) and is ready to be used on people. Some 1,500 ventilators will be produced immediately for distribution by the federal government.

Each unit costs US $10,000, which is significantly lower than the typical market price of US $30,000 to $50,000.  The ventilators were manufactured and assembled with the help of a team from the beverage company Femsa, automotive component manufacturer Metalsa and the Monterrey Technological Institute.

“It is a very meticulous process,” said Carlos Guerra, Metalsa’s mechanical engineer, whose team worked long hours and weekends in order to get the prototype ready and will be producing the ventilators at their Nuevo León factory.

Another made-in-Mexico ventilator, scheduled for delivery May 15, has been delayed. The director of the National Council for Science and Technology (Conacyt) announced April 23 that at least 500 would be produced weekly, with the first delivery in mid-May.

The Ministry of Health said on Sunday that the machines had not yet been delivered.

Hospital occupancy in Mexico reached 39 percent yesterday, and 32 percent of all intensive care beds for critically ill patients requiring intubation were full. However, in hot spots those numbers are much higher. In Mexico City only 22 percent of intensive care beds are vacant, and in Guerrero that number is 40 percent, the news agency Infobae reported.

Richard Gere, 70, and wife Alejandra Silva, 37, welcome baby No. 2

by Nicholas Hautman

Apr 23rd 2020

It’s a boy! Richard Tiffany Gere and his wife, Alejandra Silva, welcomed their second child together, ¡Hola! magazine reports.

The activist, 37, recently gave birth at the couple’s ranch in Pound Ridge, New York, according to the magazine.

The news comes just 14 months after the actor, 70, and Silva welcomed their first child together, a son named Alexander.

Gere is also the father of son Homer, 20, with his second wife, actress Carey Lowell, to whom he was married from 2002 to 2016. He was previously wed to supermodel Cindy Crawford from 1991 to 1995.

Gere is an American actor and producer. He began in films in the 1970s, playing a supporting role in Looking for Mr. Goodbar and a starring role in Days of Heaven. He came to prominence with his role in the film American Gigolo, which established him as a leading man and a sex symbol.

Silva, for her part, shares son Albert, 7, with her ex-husband, mining magnate Govind Friedland.

The Pretty Woman star and the publicist were family friends for years, but they did not start dating until 2014 when they ran into each other at a hotel in Italy that she was managing at the time. The pair quietly married in April 2018 and held a celebration with family and friends the following month at their New York home.

“The ceremony was beautiful,” the bride later told Hola! “We exchanged rings carried by our children. It was so exciting! I have to confess that I shed big tears.”

Gere and Silva announced in September 2018 that they were expecting their first child together. She gave birth to Alexander in February 2019. Us Weekly confirmed that they had another little bundle of joy on the way that November.

The Spain native has said that she is not bothered by the 33-year age difference between her and her husband. She told Hola! in 2018, “It had to be that way in this lifetime. He has promised me at least 20 good years! But I have to confess that he has much more energy than me, is much more active. It’s hard to keep up with him. … He’s not human!”

Fake news from mainstream media: 10 basic forms

by Jon Rappoport

The basic purpose of these 10 forms is the presentation of a false picture of reality.  You could find more forms, or divide these 10 into sub-categories.

The ten basic forms are:

* Direct lying about matters of fact.

* Leaving out vital information.

* Limited hangout. (This is an admission of a crime or a mistake, which only partially reveals the whole truth. The idea is that by admitting a fraction of what really happened and burying the biggest revelations, people will be satisfied and go away, and the story will never be covered again.)

* Shutting down the truth after publishing it—includes failing to follow up and investigate a story more deeply.

* Not connecting dots between important pieces of data.

* Censoring the truth, wherever it is found (or calling it “fake news”).

* Using biased “experts” to present slanted or false “facts.”

* Repeating a false story many times—this includes the echo-chamber effect, in which a number of outlets “bounce” the false story among themselves.

* Claiming a reasonable and true consensus exists, when it doesn’t, when there are many important dissenters, who are shut out from offering their analysis.

* Employing a panoply of effects (reputation of the media outlet, voice quality of the anchor, acting skills, dry mechanical language, studio lighting, overlay of electronic transmissions, etc.) to create an impression of elevated authority which is beyond challenge.

These are all traditional forms and methods.

Here’s an example of a big story that deployed all ten forms of fake news: the Swine Flu pandemic of 2009.

In the spring of 2009, the World Health Organization (elevated authority beyond challenge) announced that Swine Flu was a level-6 pandemic—its highest category of “danger.” In fact, there were only 20 confirmed cases at the time (direct lying about “danger”). And W.H.O. quietly changed the definition of “level-6” so widespread death and damage were no longer required (another aspect of direct lying).

The story was, of course, picked up by major media outlets all over the world (echo chamber effect, fake consensus, never connected dots re W.H.O. lies), and quite soon, Swine Flu case numbers rose into the thousands (direct lying, as we’ll soon see).

Medical experts were brought in to bolster the claims of danger (biased experts; important dissenters never given space to comment).

In the early fall of 2009, Sharyl Attkisson, then a star investigative reporter for CBS News, published a story on the CBS News website. She indicated that the CDC had secretly stopped counting the number of Swine Flu cases in America. No other major news outlet reported this fact (omitting vital information).

Attkisson discovered the reason the CDC had stopped counting: the overwhelming number of blood samples taken from the most likely Swine Flu patients were coming back from labs with: no trace of Swine Flu or any other kind of flu. Therefore, a gigantic hoax was revealed. The pandemic was a dud, a fake.

Despite Attkisson’s efforts, CBS never followed up on her story (shutting down the truth after exposing it). Never probed the lying by the CDC (failure to connect dots). In a sense, CBS turned Attkisson’s story into a limited hangout—a further investigation would have uncovered acres of criminal behavior by both the CDC and the World Health Organization, to say nothing of the governments and media outlets that supported these lying agencies. The mainstream press essentially censored Attkisson’s revelations.

Then, about three weeks after CBS published Attkisson’s story, WebMD published a piece in which the CDC claimed that its own (lying) estimate of 10,000 or so cases of Swine Flu in the US was a gross understatement. Truly, there were 22 MILLION cases of Swine Flu in the US (doubling-down on lying).

And that was that.

Which leads to an 11th form of fake news: if one lie doesn’t quite fly, tell a much bigger lie.

And these mainstream sources are currently shouting and bloviating about independent media spreading fake news. I guess you could call that number 12: accusing their opponents of committing the crimes they are, in fact, committing.

Playwright Willebaldo López dies

He was also an actor, director, teacher and screenwriter. Among his works are Corona de sangre and La Llorona

by the El Reportero‘s news services

The official account of Theaters in Mexico City today lamented the sensitive death of the Mexican playwright Willebaldo López Guzmán (1944-2020). Likewise, he acknowledged that he was an “outstanding actor, director, playwright, teacher and screenwriter”.

The actor, born in Queréndaro, Michoacán, studied at the School of Theater Art, recognized today as the ENAT of the Institute of Fine Arts; however, his talent on the field was not only on stage but also in the lyrics. Due to his talent, he was awarded a scholarship by the Mexican Writers Center.

According to the Encyclopedia of Literature of Mexico, his activity on stage continued until the 1980s, after which he ventured into radio and television serving as director, screenwriter and actor.

In the field of teaching he also had participation, as he taught acting, pantomime and dramatic composition courses in institutions such as the General Society of Writers of Mexico (Sogem) and in the Televisa Training Center.

He also directed the School of Theater Art. Among the works he directed are The Kings of the World, The Madness of the Angels, Blood Crown, La Llorona, The Old Men, 1979 and Twenty-Four Hours with You, among others. In addition to that, he adapted and directed some radio soap operas for the XEW.

On his way through the world of theater, he also leaves his own works that include genres such as drama and comedy, in which various social problems such as poverty, rejection of the homosexual community and marginalization of indigenous communities are presented.

In recognition of all his work, the Mexico City Congress last year awarded him the Medal of Merit in the Arts. https://www.milenio.com/cultura/fallece-el-dramaturgo-willebaldo-lopez.

“Maestro Willebaldo wrote two of the plays produced by Teatro Nahual,” La Primera Dama “and” Malinche Show “that we hope to resume when everything in the community calms down,” said Verónica Meza, director of Teatro Nahual, on her Facebook account. “I was fortunate to speak with maestro Willebaldo López, twice, and the last was in early February. I told him that we were going to premiere his play, he was very happy.”

Music consumption grows 15 percent in Brazil during quarantine

Brasilia, Apr 15 – Music consumption grew by 15 percent in Brazil during the SARS-CoV-2 virus isolation that today forces people to stay home and enjoy streaming services (listening to music or watching videos without downloading them).

Specialized media mention, for example, that in Spotify (a multi-platform application used to play music via streaming), from March 13 to Sunday, the 200 most listened songs per day in Brazil were played 953 million times on the platform.

During the same period last year, it was 831 million, an increase of 15 percent.

On YouTube (video sharing website), the 100 most viewed/listened to songs per week in Brazil between March 13 and April 9 were 1.44 billion, an increase of 30 million.

Such a boom is more concentrated in the group at the hit parade, mainly artists from the sertanejo (a very fashionable musical genre in this country where the sound of the viola predominates).

According to sources, in 2019 (March 15-April 11), Marília Mendonça, Brazil’s most watched/listened artist on YouTube, had 205 million views.

This year, in the quarantine, the duo Henrique and Juliano leads the ranking with 264 million and Mendonça is second with 224 million.

Moraes Moreira, one of the icons of Brazilian music, passed away

BRASILIA, Apr 13 – Singer-songwriter Moraes Moreira, recognized as one of the icons of Brazilian Popular Music (MPB), died today at the age of 72 in Rio de Janeiro of a fatal heart attack, the media confirmed.

He began his musical career playing accordions at dances and parties in Sao Joao. As a teenager he learned to play the guitar and when he moved to Salvador he met the musician Tom Ze.

Immunity certificates: a load of nonsense and a covert op

Your papers, please. You have none? You must go back into the dark”

by Jon Rappoport

—Once again, in this article, I step into the world of official gibberish about the epidemic and the virus and tests and so on. I point out the internal contradictions in the government position. And then I step back and look at what they’re really up to, in the way of a covert operation.

Let’s start with the official word on so-called immunity certificates.

POLITICIO, 4/10: “Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, revealed Friday the federal government is considering issuing Americans certificates of immunity from the coronavirus, as the Trump administration works to better identify those who have been infected and restart the U.S. economy in the coming weeks.”

“The proposal is contingent upon the widespread deployment of antibody tests which the National Institutes of Health and the Food and Drug Administration are in the process of validating in the U.S., Fauci said.”

“Although coronavirus testing thus far has been able to determine if an individual has an active infection, antibody tests report whether an asymptomatic person was previously infected but has since recovered [and is immune], potentially allowing them to return to their jobs.”

Now let’s take that POLITICO article apart.

Immunity certificates would be issued to people who test POSITIVE on an antibody test. Meaning: antibodies in a person’s body are a sign that he has gained immunity from the coronavirus.

But wait. How about this?

Science News, March 27: “Science News spoke with…Charles Cairns, dean of the Drexel University College of Medicine, about how antibody tests work and what are some of the challenges of developing the tests.”

“Cairns: ‘The big question is: Does a positive response for the antibodies mean that person is actively infected, or that they have been infected in the past [and are now immune]…?’”

What??

In other words, when you penetrate an inch below the surface, you find there are even official/mainstream doubts, grave doubts about the meaning of a positive antibody test. It could mean IMMUNE or it could mean INFECTED.

This would be like saying, “The photo either proves there was a sixteen-car wreck on Highway 5 or it was smooth sailing and there was no accident at all.”

Actually, since 1984, a positive antibody test has generally been taken to mean the person is infected, has the disease in question.

So why the sudden turnaround now? Why are Fauci and other government officials claiming that a positive antibody test signals immunity?

Answer: Because, with the widespread use of this simple and quick antibody test (much quicker and easier to perform than the current PCR test), a reason is invented for issuing immunity certificates. And this is what the goal is. Introduce the population to immunity certificates. As a tune-up for the underlying operation, which is:

Immunity certificates for people who eventually receive vaccinations against COVID-19 (and, finally, all vaccines).

Just take the COVID-19 vaccine and you’ll be immune and you can carry with you a certificate, wherever you go—and you WILL be allowed to go here and there and live a normal life. With your paper or digital or tattoo immunity certificate.

Whether the certificate plan will be enacted this time around (COVID-19), or in the next fake pandemic, remains to be seen. But the IDEA is now firmly planted in the public mind. You can win a “gold star” on the blackboard from the teacher—your certificate to a better life. Just obey and follow orders. TAKE THE VACCINE.

Carrot and stick. Be free, or be limited.

If, indeed, we see a COVID-19 vaccine introduced, another variation on this operation would be: “Under Emergency regulations, everyone must take the shot.” But when you do, you’ll get your very valuable certificate of immunity. You’ll win a prize. Isn’t that wonderful?

No. It isn’t.

It’s Corona Bologna.

It’s all about CONTROL.

And in this article, I haven’t discussed questions about what would actually be IN the COVID-19 vaccine. I took up that subject in a recent piece about DNA vaccines. The new DNA technology, if introduced, would PERMANENTLY alter the genetic makeup of the vaccine-recipient.

And meanwhile…don’t you just love the idea of the government first locking you up, and then “freeing” you with an official seal of approval?

“The gate is open for you, sir. You have your papers. But you, sir, you must go back. No papers.”

How to fight coronavirus (without causing a global depression)

In a letter to President Trump, Dr. Shiva Ayyadurai offers a plan for protecting those vulnerable to COVID-19 while allowing the healthy to return to work

by Luis Miguel

States and cities are shutting down businesses, closing schools, prohibiting crowds, imposing curfews—all to contain the spread of coronavirus.

The draconian measures are a major subversion of Americans’ constitutional liberties, yet proponents of such policies claim they are a necessary evil to prevent this latest pandemic from causing mass fatalities. The disastrous effect on our economy, they say, is to be preferred to the deaths of millions.

But what if we didn’t have to choose one or the other? What if protecting American lives and preserving our freedom and economic stability weren’t mutually exclusive?

Sound too good to be true? Not according to Dr. Shiva Ayyadurai.

In a letter to President Trump, Dr. Ayyadurai, a world-renowned systems scientist and pioneer in the field of systems biology, outlined a solution to the current crisis that he said would restore the immune health of the American people without jeopardizing the nation’s economic health.

Ayyadurai holds four degrees from MIT, to which he returned in 2003 to complete doctoral work within the Department of Biological Engineering—work that led him to develop CytoSolve, a “scalable computational platform for modeling the cell by dynamic integration of molecular pathways models.”

In his letter to the president, Dr. Ayyadurai rejects the response model pushed by Dr. Anthony Fauci, who serves as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and is seen as the guiding force behind the Trump administration’s coronavirus policy.

“The current trajectory of Dr. Fauci’s public ‘health’ policy will result in the short-and long-term destruction of citizens’ immune health as well as our nation’s economic health,” Dr. Ayyadurai asserts. “Dr. Fauci’s policy, at best, is based on a 1950s outdated ‘one-size-fits-all,’ non-personalized approach to medicine and public health; and at worst, is derived from a ‘fake science’ understanding of the immune system … .”

Dr. Ayyadurai argues that “[t]here is no need to shut down our entire country. There is no need to quarantine all of our citizens. The solution herein provides a path to advance the immune health of all our citizens while getting our healthy people back to work — now.”

The MIT-grad lays the foundation for his proposal by explaining that, contrary to the common misconception, it is not the virus — coronavirus or otherwise — that harms individuals, but a person’s own faulty immune system.

The modern science of the immune system informs us that it is the over reaction [sic] of our OWN weakened and dysfunctional immune system attacking tissues and cells of our own body that harms and kills, versus the virus — be it COVID-19 or any other virus…. In healthy individuals, the immune system processes pathogens with a natural immune response that is mild and non-lethal; however, in those who are immune-compromised — elderly and those with pre-existing conditions—their own immune systems may overreact; and in the case of COVID-19, attacking lung epithelial cells and tissues leading to hospitalization and mortality.

It is commonly acknowledged that even though all Americans are being asked to self-quarantine and refrain from their regular business, coronavirus generally provokes serious symptoms in the elderly and those who have weakened immune systems due to conditions like heart disease, diabetes, or obesity.

Healthy adults are usually either asymptomatic or at most experience a brief fever and flu-like symptoms, while cases of affliction in children are rare.

Dr. Ayyadurai holds that because most Americans will not be severely impacted by the virus, it is not necessary to quarantine everyone. And because the risk is the result of a weakened immune system, the key is to strengthen people’s immunity.

He then goes on to outline “the solution that can lead America back to health—immune and economic:”

STEP 1 – Organize our citizens into four (4) groups

Group I – Testing positive for COVID-19

Group II – Hospitalized and in critical condition

Group III – Immuno-compromised & NOT COVID-19 positive

Group IV – Healthy individuals & NOT COVID-19 positive

STEP 2 – Deliver a Personalized Protocol for Each Group

Group I Protocol

  • Quarantine until they test negative for COVID-19
  • 400,000 IU of Vitamin A Palmitate per day for 2 days
  • 50,000 IU of Vitamin D per day for 2 days

Group II Protocol

  • 400,000 IU of Vitamin A Palmitate per day for 2 days
  • 50,000 IU of Vitamin D per day for 2 days
  • Deliver intravenous Vitamin C – 100 mg drip per day until they are back to normal.

Group III Protocol

[Immuno-compromised are those, though not limited to, with: AIDS, CVID, Diabetes (Type I & Type II e.g. high blood sugar), COPD, Asthma, Cystic Fibrosis, autoimmune disorders, and those taking monoclonal antibody drugs]. This protocol will support boosting their internal defense mechanisms.

For Children:

  • 400,000 IU of Vitamin A Palmitate per day for 2 days
  • 50,000 IU of Vitamin D per day for 2 days
  • 500 mg of Vitamin C per day
  • Iodine/Iodide – e.g. Brand Lugols – 3 drops per drink, once per day

For Adults:

  • 400,000 IU of Vitamin A Palmitate per day for 2 days
  • 50,000 IU of Vitamin D per day for 2 days
  • 1,000 mg of Vitamin C per day on going
  • Iodine/Iodide – e.g. Brand Lugols – 6 drops per drink, once per day

Group IV Protocol

[These are healthy individuals, who do not fall into Group I or Group II]

For Children:

  • 1,000 IU Vitamin A Palmitate per day ongoing
  • 2,000 IU of Vitamin D per day ongoing
  • 250 mg of Vitamin C per day
  • Iodine/Iodide – e.g. Brand Lugols – 3 drops per drink, once per day

For Adults:

  • 10,000 IU of Vitamin A Palmitate per day
  • 5,000 IU of Vitamin D per day
  • 1,000 mg of Vitamin C per day
  • Iodine/Iodide – e.g. Brand Lugols – 6 drops per drink, once per day

STEP 3 – Back to Work and Maintenance

Healthy individuals based on the above protocol should get back to work immediately and follow their daily program as aforementioned. Individuals in Group I to Group III, until they regain full health, should do the following on a monthly basis:

  • 400,000 IU of Vitamin A Palmitate per day for 2 days, 1/month
  • 50,000 IU of Vitamin D per day for 2 days, 1/month
  • Iodine/Iodide – e.g. Brand Lugols – 3 drops per drink for children; and 6 drops per drink for adults, once per day
  • Vitamin C: 250 mg per day for children, 1000 mg per day for adults, once per day.

Such a model, based on complete information, personalized solutions, and individual choice, would be far better than ever-growing government controls we are currently witnessing.

In a video interview on The New American, Dr. Ayyadurai, who is running for U.S. Senate in Massachusetts, explained why having the right vitamin levels is crucial:

What happens when you age? Well, two things happen. Your thyroid actually goes down in function. Why is that of concern? Because when your thyroid goes down in function, your body stops producing enough vitamin A because your thyroid takes carotenoids from fruits and vegetables and it converts into vitamin A.

Why is vitamin A important? Well, vitamin A creates cytokeratins to protect your cells from impingement of other pathogens. So, if you have low vitamin A — by the way, vitamin A’s not a vitamin, it’s a hormone. It modulates all sorts of immune functions.

In a statement to TNA, physician Stephen Grable MD, also highlighted the key roles these vitamins play in immune health:

Vitamin D3 regulates the immune system, reduces cytokine storm and even calms genetic defects in young people which can predispose them to excessive inflammation.

Vitamin A is crucial in the formation and stability of epithelial cells. Vitamin A has impacts on macrophages, T cells and antibody dependent immune responses. It has been shown to lower morbidity and mortality in measles, acute pneumonia, infectious diarrhea, malaria, hand/foot/mouth disease among others.

If it all sounds too simple, remember that those who seek to impose authoritarianism detest simple solutions. Why? Simple solutions don’t provide very good cover for expanding state power.

by Ralph Flores

Multiple studies have shown that long-term oxidative stress can lead to the development of chronic conditions like cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Now, researchers report in the Journal of Natural Medicines that certain types of traditional Japanese medicines, or better known as Kampo medicines, have potent antioxidant properties, with some exhibiting the potential anti-cancer activity. The researchers looked at Kampo medicines listed in Japan’s National Health Insurance System Drug List and found that tsudosan, an herbal remedy used for regulating blood flow, had the most potent antioxidant activity among these medicines.

What is oxidative stress?

Oxidative stress refers to the imbalance of free radicals and antioxidants in the body. As the body’s cells work, it produces free radicals, unstable atoms which can potentially damage DNA and lead to chronic conditions like cancer and heart disease.

To counteract this effect, the body also produces antioxidants that neutralize these free radicals. While the body is able to maintain a balance between free radicals and antioxidants, several factors like diet and lifestyle can lead to the production of excess free radicals. In addition, the body’s immune response can also trigger oxidative stress temporarily.

Long-term oxidative stress can not only increase the risk of chronic conditions, but it can also speed up the aging process.

Kampo medicine and its antioxidant potential

First introduced in the country from China via Korea, Kampo medicine is used by around 85 percent of clinical practitioners in Japan, according to figures from the Japan Kampo Medicines Manufacturers Association. For the current study, researchers from Toho University in Japan investigated the antioxidant activities of 147 oral Kampo medicines — the entire panel in Japan’s National Health Insurance Drug List — in vitro.

The team found that most Kampo medicines that show potential antioxidant activity had Rhizoma Rhei, or more commonly known as rhubarb root. In traditional Chinese medicine, rhubarb root — referred to as da huang — is used to treat hyperlipidemia and regulate blood flow. Earlier studies on rhubarb root in Kampo medicine has shown that it contains potential anti-inflammatory and antipyretic properties. Another ingredient that they identified was magnolia bark, which also has potent antioxidant activity. A study by researchers from the University of Chicago Medical Center revealed that the bark had anti-aging and cardioprotective properties. (Related: Natural treatments for bronchitis may be found in Kampo medicine.)

Among the Kampo medicines, the researchers selected these three herbal remedies for their antioxidant potential:

– Tsudosan – a crude drug for treating hypertension and improving menstrual flow made from angelica root, rhubarb and magnolia bark

– Daisaikoto extract – an herbal formula for treating hypertension made with skullcaps, peony root, jujube, rhubarb and ginger

– Masiningan – a traditional medicine used in both China and Japan for treating constipation and diabetes

The researchers further tested the medicines’ antioxidant ability using a liver cancer cell line, as well as a mouse model. While all three exhibited antioxidant properties, tsudosan was able to improve biomarkers for oxidative stress.

Further analysis of tsudosan revealed the following ingredients:

Licorice root – in TCM, licorice root (gan cao) is used to treat dysfunction in the stomach and spleen, as well as shortness of breath

Bitter orange – an essential herb for relieving stuffy nose

Safflower – its oil can help regulate blood sugar and cholesterol levels

Japanese angelica root – when used in medicine, the herb can improve blood flow

“The results of our study suggest that the clinical usage of the Tsudosan formulation may be closely correlated to its potent antioxidant effects,” the researchers wrote in their report.

MEXICO: Doctors are ‘falling like flies’ in Tijuana, Baja California governor warns

Doctor says under-equipped clinic has been overwhelmed

by Mexico News Daily

The governor of Baja California has warned that doctors are “falling like flies” in Tijuana due to a lack of personal protective equipment (PPE) amid the worsening coronavirus pandemic.

Jaime Bonilla made the remark in a video live streamed to social media on Monday, stating he was particularly concerned because doctors at the Institute of Social Security (IMSS) public clinic No. 20 in Tijuana who have become ill with Covid-19 also work at the city’s IMSS General Hospital.

“What concerns me … is that the General Hospital has the same doctors as [the] Social Security [facility]. We’re seeing now that they’re falling like flies because they weren’t given protection,” he said.

According to the newspaper El Universal, 21 health workers at the IMSS No. 20 facility have tested positive for Covid-19 and 15 others are suspected of having the disease. There is one confirmed case among workers at the IMSS General Hospital and six others are suspected of being infected.

One health worker who asked not to be identified out of fear that he would lose his job told El Universal that when patients with respiratory problems first started arriving at the No. 20 clinic, employees were not told that they were suspected of having Covid-19.

Julio (not his real name) also said that that staff don’t have sufficient PPE to protect themselves while treating coronavirus patients, explaining that hospital authorities expect workers to wear the same mask for as long as 20 days.

“My colleagues have had to buy their own [protective] equipment, … there are long lines to buy gowns and masks because they’re not giving us enough,” he said.

Health workers at the No. 20 clinic have also taken to social media to complain about the lack of PPE. One was Dr. Faustino Ruvalcaba, who posted a letter to Facebook in which he outlined the situation.

Eugenio Derbez, a famous actor and comedian and friend of Ruvalcaba, read the letter in a video posted to Twitter on Sunday.

According to Derbez, the letter said that the hospital was overwhelmed with both confirmed coronavirus patients and people who have been diagnosed with atypical pneumonia.

“The public has no idea what is happening in the hospital. The third floor was prepared for the exclusive use of patients with coronavirus, but it is already full,” he said, reading from Ruvalcaba’s letter.

“We don’t have the equipment and material to be able to protect ourselves. … What we are using is equipment bought [with money] out of our own pockets. We’re spending more than a quarter of our salaries … to buy equipment,” the letter said.

Derbez begged for help for the public hospitals on Mexico’s northern border, calling on citizens to donate items such as masks, gowns and goggles.

In response, the IMSS chief in Baja California accused the actor of spreading fake news. Dr. Desirée Sagarnaga Durante said in a video posted to Twitter that there was no doctor by the name of Faustino Ruvalcaba at the IMSS No. 20 clinic, charging that the letter was made up.

Her video, which had been viewed 1.5 million times as of Tuesday morning, triggered a social media backlash against Derbez, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Derbez countered with another Twitter video posted beneath a message that read: “No … it’s not fake news. It’s sad that more time is being spent trying to hide the truth than saving lives.”

“There have been a number of attacks against me and the doctors saying that this is all a lie,” he said in the video. “I just hung up with doctors at the clinic and I want to tell everyone that what I say is true. … I don’t like to get involved in politics. I’m not attacking anyone,” Derbez said.

A reporter for the news website Noticias Ya subsequently tracked down Ruvalcaba, interviewed him and shared the video on Facebook. He confirmed that the situation at the IMSS No. 20 clinic is indeed dire.

“The epidemic has completely exceeded our weapons [to control it]. That’s clear,” Ruvalcaba said.

Governor Bonilla also came to Derbez’s defense, saying in his video address on Monday that while he may not have the complete and exact information about the situation at the IMSS clinic, many health workers there have become ill with Covid-19. He said that he has been worried about the IMSS health system since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.

“I felt that our Achilles’ heel was going to be the social security [system], because I saw a lot of detachment. There was no concern. I did not honestly see the social security delegation concerned about the issues,” Bonilla said.

For its part, IMSS said in a statement on Sunday that it “promptly attended and controlled an external contagion in several workers” at the No. 20 clinic in Tijuana.

The outbreak “was not attributable to [a lack of] personal protection equipment, nor to the care of suspected or confirmed [Covid-19] patients,” it said.

President López Obrador, meanwhile, blamed his adversaries. He told Tuesday’s press conference that “the conservatives” have launched a disinformation campaign that co-opts well known personalities to relay their message and “stop the transformation of Mexico.”

He cited an athlete, a recording artist and a comedian as being among those who have been recruited in order to “maintain the system of corruption.” Soccer star Javier “El Chicharito” Hernández, singer Thalía and now Derbez have all been critical recently of the López Obrador administration.

There were 368 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Baja California as of Monday but state Health Minister Alonso Pérez Rico has acknowledged that the real number of cases is probably much higher.

Alheli Calderón, a medical researcher at the College of the Northern Border, said earlier this month that it is not plausible that Mexico’s northern border states have so few cases of Covid-19 compared to the states they adjoin in the United States.

California had more than 24,000 confirmed cases of Covid-19 as of Tuesday morning, according to a New York Times database, almost 2,000 of which are in San Diego, located just across the border from Tijuana.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, Apr 16 – Like during the tragic Hurricane Maria in 2017, corruption today is rampant in Puerto Rico amid the Covid-19 crisis, after an attempt at defrauding 38 million dollars from the Government was detected.

The concession of a contract last week to a construction company to purchase Covid-19 test kits has placed Puerto Rican Governor Wanda Vazquez Garced in a frail position, after she had consolidated in the post, which she took over in August 2019, after the popular overthrow of Governor Ricardo Rossello Nevares.

The benefited company, Apex General Contractors, which has no experience in the medical field, received 19 million dollars, 50 percent of a 38-million-dollar deal, to acquire test kits to detect the new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which has so far killed 51 people in Puerto Rico.

That sum, paid in advanced by the Puerto Rican Government, could be recovered because the Oriental Bank froze the transfer to an institution in Colorado, the United States, and warned about the irregularity to federal authorities, thus freezing Apex’s account.

Governor Vazquez Garced strongly defended the transaction, which involved local officials, in addition to recommending the spokesman for the medical task force, Segundo Rodriguez Qulinchini, thus ignoring acting Health Minister Concepción Quiñones de Longo.

The official, who resigned in silence and told reporters to ask ‘the lady governor’ about the reason for her resignation, said later that they wanted to force her from La Fortaleza, the venue of the government, to sign in 21 minutes a contract of which she had no knowledge.

Mexico’s Covid-19 statistics show advance into epidemic phase three

MEXICO, Apr 15 – Statistics on Covid-19 epidemic in Mexico show an advance into phase three, which is expected to begin in late April or early May, the Secretariat of Health said on Tuesday.

At the regular afternoon press conference chaired by Undersecretary of Prevention Hugo López-Gatell at the National Palace, it was informed that there were 406 deaths yesterday, but there are 90 other deaths that are not added to that number because it has not been confirmed whether the deceased suffered from Covid-19.

The problem is that there are patients affected by influenza and other respiratory diseases in Mexico, and as long as the real cause of death is not determined, they cannot include them in the list of confirmed Covid-19 cases.

For his part, Epidemiology Director José Luis Alomia noted in the technical report certified by the World Health Organization (WHO) that at 13:00 hours on Tuesday, there were 5,399 confirmed cases, 10,792 suspicious patients, 24,000 ruled out individuals and 40,091 people tested.

The incidence rate is 4.22 per 100,000 inhabitants, and the country is still in phase two, but very close to phase three. The new measures to be prepared for the new phase will be informed on Thursday.

Over 1,000 Bolivians stranded in American countries want to return

LA PAZ, Apr 17 – The Defender of the People of Bolivia Nadia Cruz confirmed Thursday that about 1,194 Bolivians stranded in six American countries are trying to return to their homeland.

They remained in other nations in the context of the advance of Covid-19, and many governments, as measures to prevent the entry of the disease, closed their borders, including that of Bolivia.

Nadia Cruz explained that 1.449 Bolivians stranded in Chile want to return. It is the largest number abroad, followed by Mexico (62), Argentina (38), Brazil and the United States (22 each), and French Antilles (1).

Bolivia closed its borders on March 26, following the government’s decree of a state of health emergency to fight the pandemic.
