AMLO challenges US claim that narcos control one-third of Mexican territory

General calls them ‘ungoverned areas’ and one element behind migrant flows

by Mexico News Daily

President López Obrador has rejected a United States government claim that criminal organizations control “ungoverned areas” that account for about onethird of Mexico’s territory.

The commander of the United States Northern Command made the claim Tuesday at a U.S. Department of Defense press conference in response to a question about the situation on the Mexico-U.S. border. “I would say that [the  recent influx of migrants to the border] is a symptom of a broader problem that … manifested itself over the last year or so. …Two major hurricanes, Covid, instability created by transnational criminal organizations, all of these are indicators and reasons why people want to leave Central America, South America and Mexico to come to our nation,” General Glen D.

VanHerck said. “… Counternarcotics, migration, human trafficking, they’re all symptoms of transnational criminal organizations who are opeTodas las entradasrating oftentimes in ungoverned areas – 30% to 35% of Mexico – that is creating some of the things we’re dealing with at the border,” he said.

“And so, we need to take a whole-of-government look at that problem. I think it’s a national security imperative that we must look at.” At his regular news conference on Thursday, López Obrador dismissed the general’s territorial control claim as untrue. “But we respect the opinion of everyone,” he added. “We’re going to continue having good relations with the United States government, we’re not going to argue with the United States government. [President Joe Biden] is very respectful with us.”

According to the news magazine Proceso, it was the first time since the 2006-2012 presidency of Felipe Calderón that a high-ranking United States military leader publicly enunciated the scale of the Mexico’s drug trafficking and territorial control problem. However, the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has acknowledged the sway cartels hold in Mexico, and the U.S. drug market.

“Mexican TCOs [transnational criminal organizations] are the greatest drug trafficking threat to the United States; they control most of the U.S. drug market and have established varied transportation routes, have advanced communications capabilities, and hold strong affiliations with criminal groups and gangs in the United States,” the DEA said in its 2020 National Drug Threat Assessment report.

It said that Mexican cartels continue to control lucrative smuggling corridors, primarily across the United States’ southwestern border. “The two largest organizations, the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), show signs of expansion in Mexico, demonstrating their continued influence even compared to other Mexican TCOs,” the DEA said.

“These TCOs expand their criminal influence by engaging in business alliances with other organizations, including independent DTOs [drug trafficking organizations], and working in conjunction with transnational gangs, U.S.based street gangs, prison gangs, and Asian money laundering organizations.”

In addition to the Sinaloa Cartel and the CJNG, the DEA identified seven other Mexican criminal groups that have a significant drug trafficking impact on the United States. They are the Beltrán Leyva Organization, the Northeast Cartel/Los Zetas, the Guerreros Unidos, the Gulf Cartel, the Juárez Cartel/La Línea, the Familia Michoacana, and Los Rojos.

Mexico has long been considered to have a territorial control problem, especially in rural areas where there is evidence that cartels control large swathes of land in several states. Source: Reforma (sp), El Financiero (sp), Infobae (sp)

Government to announce big oil discovery in Tabasco – uncertain

Dzimpona onshore field has potential yield of 600 million barrels of oil equivalent

by the El Reportero’s wire services

President López Obrador will officially announce on Thursday the discovery of a large oil and gas field in Tabasco but there is no certainty that the deposit will be commercially viable. According to government officials consulted by the newspaper Milenio, the deposit to be announced is the Dzimpona onshore field, located in Comalcalco not far from the site of the Dos Bocas refinery, which is currently under construction on the Gulf of Mexico coast. The government believes the field has the initial potential to yield 600 million barrels of oil equivalent (boe). López Obrador will announce the field during an event to celebrate the 83rd anniversary of the expropriation of the Mexican oil industry. Former president Lázaro Cárdenas nationalized the sector on March 18, 1938. López Obrador said earlier this month that there has been a lot of progress in terms of oil exploration and that the government has been lucky. Pemex CEO Octavio Romero said Sunday that the new discovery is “a large field surrounded by smaller ones that could together hold prospective resources comparable to those found in Ixachi and Quesqui.” Located in Veracrz, Ixachi is an onshore field discovered in 2019 with an estimated 2 billion boe of recoverable resources, mainly gas, Romero said. The Quesqui field, discovered in Tabasco in 2020, holds almost 1 billion boe, he said. Marco Cota, CEO of Talanza Energy Consulting, warned that it is too soon to call the latest discovery a success. He noted that presidents have traditionally made big announcements about oil discoveries on March 18, asserting that they tend to be mere political marketing, especially during election years, as is the case this year. Cota said that the government can only truly talk about success with respect to the discovery once it has been confirmed as commercially viable. Over the years, Pemex has identified dozens of potential fields that it has been unable to develop, he said.

Here’s why eating garlic and onions can prevent diabetes and more

This incredible family of edible medicinal plants is composed of garlic, white and purple onions, leeks, chives, scallions and shallots. According to studies, alliums contain unique compounds called organosulfur compounds and natural antioxidants called polyphenols that are responsible for their disease-fighting activities. In a recent study, researchers at the Federal University of Technology and purple onion show antioxidant, antidiabetic and antihypertensive properties Garlic and onions are spices commonly used in cooking. They also serve as ingredients in several traditional delicacies in Nigeria that are known to contain plenty of polyphenols. To assess the beneficial properties of garlic, white onion and pur

ple onion, the researchers first obtained extracts from each and assessed their inhibitory effects on certain enzymes. They also conducted assays to determine the antioxidant capacities of the extracts. ACE is the enzyme responsible for converting angiotensin I into angiotensin II, the hormone that increases blood pressure, as well as body water and sodium content. Angiotensin II elevates

blood pressure by constricting the blood vessels; hence, chemicals that can inhibit the activity of ACE, which is responsible for the production of angiotensin II, are used for the treatment of hypertension. a-Amylase is the enzyme that breaks down starch and glycogen into glucose and maltose (two glucose molecules bound together). In humans, this enzyme is produced by the salivary glands and the pancreas. a-Glucosidase, on the other hand, is responsible for breaking down carbohydrates in the small intestine and facilitating the absorption of glucose. Inhibiting the activity of this enzyme is one of the strategies currently used to prevent the rise of blood sugar levels following a carbohydrate-filled meal. The researchers reported that the garlic, purple onion and white onion extracts inhibited the activities of ACE, a-amylase and a-glucosidase in vitro in a concentrationdependent manner. At a half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 0.59 mg / mL, the purple onion extract exhibited a higher inhibitory effect on ACE than the white onion extract (IC50 = 0.66 mg / mL) and the garlic (IC50 = 0.96 mg / mL) extract. Meanwhile, the white onion extract showed a significantly stronger inhibitory effect on a-amylase at an IC50 of 3.93 mg / mL than the garlic extract (IC50 = 8.19 mg / mL) and the purple onion (IC50 = 8.27 mg / mL) extract. The garlic extract, on the other hand, showed a similar inhibitory effect (IC50 = 4.50 mg / mL) on a-glucosidase as the white and purple onion extracts. All three extracts also showed dose-dependent free radical scavenging activity and reducing power in the antioxidant assays. Based on these findings, the researchers concluded that garlic, white onion and purple onion can be used to treat or prevent diabetes and hypertension, thanks to their ability to inhibit ACE, a-amylase and a-glucosidase activity, as well as lipid peroxidation in the pancreas and the heart. Don’t you know what they are doing to us?

Who would have thought that the US would be about to collapse in a so short period of time, suddenly.

That the greatest economic-military power would have been attacked in silence – not with nuclear bombs or military weapons, but with biological weapons, and traitors from within who would have sold themselves for money and power to the enemies of freedom. Who would have said that the Apocalypse that I have known in the Holy Scriptures as a child, which describes an end of times, where a satanic destruction takes over the world and a war between good and evil begins, would be witnessed now, in these moments.

That people without faces, with no direction other than that offered by a corrupt government run by ‘experts,’ a gagged press and social networks that keep the population asleep and unconscious – would be walking without our freedoms guaranteed and protected by the Constitution. Who would have said that the very rulers chosen by ourselves to protect us from external and domestic enemies, would have contributed to the destruction of the economy, taken away our popular power to govern ourselves, and have overshadowed the divine light that has shone on this blessed land called the United States, while the people did not realized what was being done to us.

Those powerful behind the visible power want to kill us, because they say that we are too many and we hinder them, therefore we must stop the births and convince the women of fertile bellies to kill the unborn and thus reduce our numbers, so that an idle and maliciously elite can take the planet for their own benefit.

If you have not noticed, we are about to lose the freedom and the borders that serve us and each country in the world, that protect our cultures, histories, and ancestral customs while many of us have not realized it… They want to put poison in us to die gently and slowly, making us believe that it is for our own good; however, they do not tell us that with certain vitamins taken no virus can kill us. It is time to wake up. Stop watching TV and the junk news where they offer us their violence and scandals to keep us scared and exalted.

I assure you that they are trying to take God away from you so they can manipulate you and take over your minds more easily. Freedom was given to us by God and not by the government, don’t forget.

Why temperature checks are doing more harm than good,’ says doctor

By Zachary Mack

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced government officials and business owners to go to great lengths to attempt to control the spread of the virus. And while face masks, hand washing, and social distancing have all proven to be highly effective in preventing the spread of the disease, other methods, it turns out, are more for show. This includes temperature checks—which, according to one doctor, actually “might be doing more harm than good,” thanks to the false sense of security they provide. While those foreheadscanning no-contact thermometers may be becoming a more common sight these days, they really only serve to put your mind dangerously at ease, James Hamblin, MD, writes for The Atlantic. “The practice is sort of like spraying down the sides of buildings, showering football players in hand sanitizer, or deep cleaning an office carpet,” Hamblin notes. “These things might make us feel safer, but they may not keep us safe if they actually cause us to let our guard down.” Temperature checks are the current standard for admission to anywhere from a school or an office building to a courthouse or boarding a flight. But, as Hamblin points out, there’s little evidence to support that they’re helpful in stopping the spread of COVID-19. That’s largely because symptoms can vary greatly from patient to patient, and many people infected with coronavirus may not actually have a fever. A recent paper published in the journal Travel Medicine and Infectious Disease found that temperature checks are particularly unreliable among a younger demographic. The researchers evaluated 84 men with COVID-19 with a median age of 21, taking their temperatures twice a day for two weeks starting on the day that each patient was diagnosed. With one exception, none of patients had a fever for longer than three days. In fact, 83 percent of the patients evaluated never even developed a fever at all. Even widening the demographics, it’s been proven that a fever is not always a symptom among COVID-19 patients. A July study in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) journal Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report revealed that 20 percent of 164 symptomatic COVID-19 patients, whose median age was 50, did not have a fever. Other experts take issue with the fact that an elevated temperature may not be the result of coronavirus. A long list of health issues— including everything from the flu and food poisoning to Crohn’s disease and sunburn—could be the cause, meaning that temperature checks could very well put out people who don’t have COVID-19, Bruce Y. Lee, MD, wrote for Forbes. These factors have led to a debate as to whether the now-common temperature check does what it’s intended to do. “There’s never been any data to show that it’s prevented any transmissions [of COVID-19],” Eric Topol, MD, executive vice president of Scripps Research, told Popular Science. “The temperature check is of no value. It should be abandoned.” Hamblin agrees, writing: “If people are reassured by a fever check and compromise on the basics— wearing a mask, distancing, hand-washing—they put themselves and others at risk. This test has no ability to reassure people, but a real ability to mislead.” Even the CDC, which doesn’t outright dissuade business owners from using temperature checks, contends that they do not provide sufficient protection. Their general guidelines warn that “screening and health checks are not a replacement for other protective measures such as social distancing.” And for more on why your experience with coronavirus may be different from others, check out Dr. Fauci Says This May Already Be Keeping You Safe From COVID.

House to vote on bills that provide citizenship path to undocumented immigrant

by Mimi Nguyen Ly

The Democrat-controlled House of Representatives is set to vote on two immigration bills that would provide a citizenship path for undocumented immigrants and legal status for immigrant farmworkers. House Democratic Leader Steny Hoyer (DMd.) told reporters that the House would take up the bills on March 18 after they cleared a procedural hurdle on March 16. Neither bill was taken up in the Senate when it had a Republican major ity.

With Democrats now holding narrow control of the upper chamber, they hope to be able to attract some Republican support. The American Dream and Promise Act would offer a pathway to citizenship to those who entered the country undocumentedly as children and are currently living in the United States, also known as “Dreamers.” The same bill would also help immigrants in the country who received temporary migration protections. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-Calif.). An estimated 4.4 million undocumented immigrants could become eligible for permanent residency if the bill is passed, according to the Migration Policy Institute.

In 2019, seven Republicans joined 230 Democrats in the House in voting for the bill. The other immigration bill, the Farm Workforce Modernization Act, would provide undocumented immigrant agricultural workers a path to legal status, and make the H-2A guestworker program more flexible for employers. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) and has a Republican cosponsor, Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-Wash.).

It passed the House in 2019 with the support of 34 Republicans. Hoyer said on March 16: “These two bills are not the fix, but they are [a] fix to part of the problem.

But we need to pass comprehensive immigration reform and we’re going to do so in the coming months.” House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) wears a mask while speaking to reporters at the U.S. Capitol in Washington on Jan. 11, 2021. (Stefani Reynolds/Getty Images) Rep.

Tom McClintock (R-Calif.), ranking member of the House Judiciary Sub-Committee on Immigration, said on March 16 that the two bills are “implicitly promising the next generation [that] all they have to do is get here and their turn will come.” The two bills each address portions of a larger, radical immigration reform bill that Democrats formal CITIZENSHIP ly introduced last month in both the House and the Senate with the support of President Joe Biden, the U.S. Citizenship Act of 2021.

This bill models closely Biden’s sweeping proposal he sent to Congress on his first day in office. It would provide an eight-year pathway to U.S. citizenship for an estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants in the country. Its lead sponsors are Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) and Rep.

Linda Sánchez (D-Calif.). The bill doesn’t offer any enhanced border security, which past immigration negotiations have used as a way to win Republican votes. The bill would need the support of at least 10 Republicans in the Senate to pass. Sen. Dick Durbin (DIll.), the Senate’s No. 2 Democrat, said on March 15 that he doesn’t believe that the Biden-backed bill would have enough backing in either chamber. But he promised that the House would eventually pass a more far-reaching immigration reform plan. Sen.

Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), one of the leading Republicans in past talks on immigration, said he believed bipartisan progress on immigration legislation would be “much harder” amid a surge in undocumented immigrants at the U.S.–Mexico border. “Why would you legalize anybody, sending another incentive to keep coming, until you stop the flow?” he told a reporter on Capitol Hill. “I think it’s going to be really hard to get a bipartisan bill put together on anything that has a legalization component until you stop the flow.”

House passes Biden’s $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package

by Zachary Stieber

The House of Representatives on Wednesday passed the updated version of President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package. The vote was 220211, with all Democrats voting for the bill except for Rep. Jared Golden (D-Maine) and all Republicans voting against it. The House passed a version of the bill late last month, followed by the Senate on March 4. The upper chamber removed the $15 federal minimum wage hike and changed other provisions, such as decreasing weekly supplemental unemployment aid by $100 to $300 a week. No Republicans supported the package in either vote. Biden plans on signing the bill on Friday and “hitting the road” in the near future to try to convince Americans the package was a good idea, according to the White House. Press secretary Jen Psaki during a press conference in Washington called it “the most progressive bill in American history.” Democrats utilized a budget process to ram the package through Congress with no bipartisan support, drawing criticism from the GOP. “I rise in opposition to the partisan $1.9 trillion spending bill before us today. It’s shameful Democrats have disregarded their obligation to provide real COVID relief to the American people and are instead attempting to use this process to jam through partisan agenda items. This bill is not targeted, timely, or tied to COVID. We need to focus on solving the critical issues at hand: getting vaccines to Americans, providing relief to our local businesses, restaurants, and entertainment venues, and supporting those who have been seriously impacted by this pandemic. Only 9 percent of this massive $1.9 trillion package goes to fighting COVID-19. And outside of stimulus payments, nearly half won’t even be spent this year,” Rep. Ann Wagner (RMo.) told colleagues on the House floor on Wednesday. But Republicans have done the same thing in the past, and Democrats noted they broke no rules. “We have acted with the urgency this pandemic demands while following every House rule and proper procedure required for a budget reconciliation package,” House Budget Chairman John Yarmuth (D-Ky.) said. “The American Rescue Plan is aggressive, no doubt about it, but researchers and health professionals have told us this is what it is needed to scale up testing, and to speed up equitable vaccine distribution. They said this is what is needed if we want to save lives and defeat this pandemic once and for all. Economists have also made clear what is needed to generate a strong strong, inclusive economic recovery. And, again, we listened,” he said. Others also said the bill would provide much-needed relief. “A once-in-a-lifetime pandemic requires bold investment and that is what the American Rescue Plan is. This bill invests $20 billion to get shots in arms and make sure everyone knows where, when, and how to get a vaccine. Many students are back in school or going back soon. California will get $15 billion to reopen safely and keep schools open to make up for lost time,” Rep. Salud Carbajal (D-Calif.) said on the House floor. “We’ve also invested in the backbone of our economy—small businesses. In fact, economists believe this bill can bring us back to near full employment in about a year. To ensure local governments can keep providing essential services, this bill delivers over $259 million to cities and counties in my district alone. Finally, this package invests in the American people. Direct payments, unemployment  benefits, tax credits, and health subsidies will lift millions out of poverty.” Republicans asserted that the bill included a number of measures unrelated to combating the pandemic. Rep. Andy Barr (R-Ky.) argued the economy is already poised for a full recovery while accusing Democrats of “exploiting this pandemic” to pass partisan items such as giving money to state and local governments, and sending checks to prisoners. Lawmakers last passed a stimulus in December 2020, when former President Donald Trump was still in office. The $900 billion package included a round of stimulus checks, additional money for the Paycheck Protection Program, and supplemental unemployment aid.
