Transforming ‘Deferred Action’ for young immigrants into opportunities

Young people graduate from school, while a young woman sws her solidarity with the ACT.

by Edward Kissam,
EdSource, News Report

President Obama’s announcement of a new immigration program, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), last June makes 2013 a year of hope for undocumented immigrant youth and young adults. However, a key factor in determining whether their dreams become reality will be their ability to enroll in adult schools and community college programs.
Modeled on the DREAM Act, DACA provides undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as children (before age 16), and who were under age 31 when the program was announced in 2012, relief from the threat of deportation. The program provides them work authorization, an opportunity to move out of the shadows of twilight employment into mainstream jobs.
Potential benefit to 1.3 million U.S. youth

Nationally, deferred action can immediately benefit about 1.3 million immigrant youth and young adults who are age15 or older. About 305,000 of them live in California, the nation’s largest immigrant state.

As of Dec. 13, 2012, some 368,000 young people had applied for deferred action, and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) continues to process applications quite rapidly and approve most.

Applicants are required to have at least a high school degree or GED or be “in school” to qualify. But many undocumented immigrant youth do poorly in school, and an estimated 43 percent of the potential age-qualified DACA applicants haven’t graduated or secured a GED. To qualify, they will need to enroll in an adult education program for English as a Second Language or courses in basic skills, vocational or workforce preparation training.
In rural areas, their need for adult education is even higher. For example, estimates from the National Agricultural Worker Survey suggest that 80 percent of California’s 21,000 DACA-eligible farmworkers did not graduate from high school or get a GED.

Yet the state system’s adult-education service capacity—at both community colleges and adult schools—has been cut almost in half in recent years. The California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office reported a 38 percent decrease in non-credit course sections between 2008-2009 and 2011-2012, and the California Department of Education estimates a 50 percent drop in enrollment during the same period.

This means there is an adult-education emergency in California. More than 140,000 immigrant youth and young adults must enroll in an adult education program to qualify to work legally at the very point when capacity is already well below demand and when employers’ needs for a skilled, diverse workforce is once again growing due to the economic recovery.

Updating system could boost economy

An analysis by the California Legislative Analyst’s Office argues that it would now actually be feasible to start with the long-overdue process of bringing adult-education systems up to date.

It would be ironic if California were to slam the door of opportunity at a point when we can expect a surge of demand for adult education courses from those who never managed to complete high school. Previously, the state has been the nation’s leader in developing immigrant-friendly education policy, allowing undocumented students in-state tuition (Assembly Bill 540, in 2001) and making undocumented students eligible for state-funded college assistance beginning in January of this year (AB 131).

Failure to make space for those who desperately need access would not only hurt young immigrant adults, but also California employers. They would employ tens of thousands of newly legal workers, who might–via adult-learning programs–build the workplace skills they need to take on increasing levels of responsibility.

Budget constraints are a reality. But DACA applicants who resume their interrupted education by enrolling in an adult-education course and continue onward to complete a course of study leading to certification or an AA degree will probably see immediate increases of about $12,000 in their annual earnings.

This translates into increased income-tax revenue for California, which would in turn offset the modest costs of making available more adult basic education, ESL, and non-credit community college courses to prepare students for careers.

This year is one of opportunity for California’s state government and educators to take practical steps to make the vision of “lifelong learning” a reality.

The strength of California’s economy, the vitality of its social and cultural life and the future of civic life in the state rests on fully integrating immigrants into society. Where better to start than by expanding the adult education system capacity so undocumented youth and young adults can qualify for deferred action?

21 signs that U.S. public schools have become training centers for sexual deviancy

by Michael Snyder
American Dream

COLUMN – Why do men and women have a such a hard time relating to each other in a meaningful way in America today? Could our oversexed culture have anything to do with it? In the United States today, we are constantly being bombarded with sexual messages. Just think about it. Did you watch the Super Bowl a few weeks ago? Most of the commercials were about sex on some level, and the “halftime show” featuring Beyonce might as well have been a strip club act. It was utterly shameful. But in America today, all of this is considered to be “normal”.

We literally worship sex, and we can never get enough of it. And of course the results of such a society are predictable. There are 20 million new sexually-transmitted infections in the U.S. each year, we have the highest teen pregnancy rate on the planet, and it is estimated that one out of every four girls in the U.S. is sexually abused before they become adults. This culture of sex is pushed on our children from a very early age, and at this point it would be quite accurate to say that U.S. public schools have become training centers for sexual deviancy. A lot of people focus on “sex education” as the problem, but the truth is that it goes much deeper than that. Sex education only lasts for a few weeks at most.

The much bigger problem is the fact that an obsession with sex literally permeates our schools. If parents could only eavesdrop on the conversations that our teens are having, they would be absolutely horrified. Thanks to endless brainwashing by the mainstream media, our teens are absolutely addicted to a sexual atmosphere. Every form of entertainment that they enjoy is soaked with sexual imagery, and lust and sex are never far from their minds when they relate to members of the opposite sex (or sometimes the same sex).

So should we really be surprised that students are having sex with each other in the hallways of our schools? Should we be surprised that young teachers are taking advantage of our students sexually behind closed doors? We have created a society that is sexually supercharged, and what we are witnessing now are the predictable results of the very foolish decisions that we have made.

The following are 21 signs that U.S. public schools have become training centers for sexual deviancy…

#1 There is a raging epidemic of sexually-transmitted diseases among our young people. According to the latest figures released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, there are 20 million new sexually-transmitted infections in the United States every single year, and Americans between the ages of 15 and 24 account for approximately 50 percent of those new sexually-transmitted infections.

#2 Many of our teens our catching diseases that they can’t even pronounce correctly. There were more than 1.4 million cases of chlamydia reported in the United States in 2011. An astounding 33 percent of those cases involved Americans that were younger than 20 years of age.

#3 At this point, one out of every four teen girls in the U.S. has at least one sexually transmitted disease.

#4 Apparently, all of the propaganda about “safe sex” is not really working very well. According to one survey, 24 percent of all U.S. teens that have an STD say that they still have unprotected sex.

#5 When you take morality out of public life, the results are predictable. In the United States today, approximately 47 percent of all high school students have had sex.

#6 Many of our young people seem to not understand the value of waiting until marriage to become a mother. Amazingly, one out of every five teen girls in the U.S. actually wants to be a teenage mother.

#7 When I was growing up, I don’t remember a single girl being pregnant at my high school. But today all of that has changed.

#8 If you can believe it, the United States has the highest teen pregnancy rate on the entire planet.

#9 Increasingly, oral sex is being promoted to our young people as a “safer” form of sex. According to shocking research conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately two-thirds of all Americans in the 15 to 24 year old age bracket have engaged in oral sex.

#10 Sex “education” has become much more about “indoctrination” in recent years. One recent example of this trend was detailed in the New York Times…

IMAGINE you have a 10- or 11-year-old child, just entering a public middle school. How would you feel if, as part of a class ostensibly about the risk of sexually transmitted diseases, he and his classmates were given “risk cards” that graphically named a variety of solitary and mutual sex acts? Or if, in another lesson, he was encouraged to disregard what you told him about sex, and to rely instead on teachers and health clinic staff members?

That prospect would horrify most parents. But such lessons are part of a middle-school curriculum that Dennis M. Walcott, the New York City schools chancellor, has recommended for his system’s newly mandated sex-education classes. There is a parental “opt out,” but it is very limited, covering classes on contraception and birth control.

#11 Sexual “experimentation” among our teens is reaching heights never seen before. According to one recent study, sexual contact between teen girls in the United States is now at the highest level ever recorded.

#12 In America today, sex in public school hallways has become a common occurrence.

#13 Would you feel okay about your teenage girl sharing a bathroom with boys? In the state of Massachusetts, boys will now be able to freely use girls restrooms and girls locker rooms if it makes them feel more “comfortable”.

#14 One of the results of our “culture of sex” has been an explosion in the number of babies being born outside of marriage. For women under the age of 30 living in the United States today, more than half of all babies are being born out of wedlock.

#15 Being a single parent is incredibly hard, but more U.S. children are being raised by just one parent than ever before. At this point, more than one out of every four children in the United States is being raised by a single parent.

#16 Thanks to our “sexual revolution”, men and women are having a harder time than ever relating to each other in a meaningful way. Our young people are being taught that marriage is a “burden” and that they should delay it for as long as possible. Today, an all-time low 44.2 percent of all Americans between the ages of 25 and 34 are married.

#17 There is an epidemic of sex between teachers and students in the United States. In fact, for some teachers one student is just simply not enough. For example, a 33-year-old art teacher down in Arizona was charged with having sex with four of her male students.

#18 A former high school English teacher down in Texas has that teacher beat. She has been accused of having sex with five different male students. The most disturbing part of her story is that she is a mother of three children and her husband is serving this country in the U.S. Army.

#19 But a high school teacher down in Georgia has both of them beat. She was recently charged with having sex with seven of her students.

#20 Sometimes even teachers that have been convicted of having sex with a student cannot stop themselves. For example, there was one case where a probation officer found a student that a teacher had been convicted of having sex with previously hiding in her closet…

Latin News reports on President Hugo Chávez

VENEZUELA: Chávez home to die, speculates opposition

by the El Reportero’s wire services

Hugo ChávezHugo Chávez

According to Latin News, nothing more has been heard from President Hugo Chávez since his surprise return to Venezuela early on Feb. 18, fuelling speculation that plans are afoot for him to swear in privately before the supreme court and then step aside, triggering snap elections in which Vice-President Nicolás Maduro would bid to replace him. Senior ministers continue to insist that the president remains in full control of his faculties and continues to run the country, now from a hospital bed in Caracas, rather than Havana, Cuba.

Chávez’s return after two long months in Cuba in almost total silence (because he literally could not talk, it has now transpired), will help restore some stability, even in the absence of any proper details of his medical condition.

The photos released of the president prior to his return evidenced that he is not at all a well man. Officials from the ruling Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela (PSUV) were clear that the president’s immediate priorities remained medical, not political. In response to opposition calls for a resolution to what it says is the extra constitutional state of affairs in the country since Chávez’s failure (on Jan. 10) to swear in for the new term to which he was elected in October 2012, the state governor of Anzoátegui, Aristóbulo Istúriz, who sits on the PSUV leadership, said that Chávez 6would swear in “when he is well and healthy”, noting that the PSUV-controlled national assembly had given the president an indefinite period to get better. In a similar vein, Rodrigo Cabezas, a Venezuelan delegate to the Andean Parliament and also on the PSUV leadership, on 19 February stated, “The president has returned to continue his medical treatment, he has a time that is not political. His time now is not political”.

‘Sources’ from the supreme court (TSJ) quoted by the opposition daily El Universal on Feb. 19 made clear that “there has been no change in the exceptional circumstances that motivated the constitutional chamber’s Jan. 9 ruling, thanks to which the head of state and his ministers remain in their functions, despite the fact that the former could not meet the requirement to take office on Jan. 10”.

Nicaragua: More social investments with international support

(Prensa Latina) Nicaragua will carry out new aqueduct and sewer system works in 19 main cities with collaboration from Spain, the European Union and regional financial bodies, the government confirmed today.

Resources from Fondo de Agua (Spain), the EU and the Central American Economic Integration Bank (BCEI) and the Inter-American Development Bank (BID) will back the projects, reported Rosario Murillo, a member of the presidential Cabinet.

The works will go from investment studies to construction work to install and extend water supply and sewer service, said Murillo.

According to Director of the Spanish Agency of International Cooperation for Development (AECID), Juan Lopez-Doriga, this is the most ambitious project ever carried out by AECID with a Latin American government.

El Salvador sets up special anti-gang unit

(Prensa Latina) The presidents of the Central American Integration System (SICA) are holding a summit today, in this capital, with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto to promote relations and collaboration in Middle America.

Prior to the beginning of his first governmental visit to Costa Rica and Central America, Peña Nieto announced that Mexico would participate in the Infrastructure Fund for Middle America and the Caribbean Countries.

Report: Food dyes linked to cancer

by QMI Agency

Many artificial food dyes that color everything from breakfast cereal to ice cream should be banned because they pose cancer risks, a new report from the Center for Science in the Public Interest says.

“These synthetic chemicals do absolutely nothing to improve the nutritional quality or safety of foods, but trigger behavior problems in children and, possibly, cancer in anybody,” said CSPI executive director Michael F. Jacobson, co-author of the report, Food Dyes: A Rainbow of Risks.

Manufacturers worldwide each year use about seven million kilograms of artificial colors in common prepared foods like cookies, candy, pop and ice cream.

The three most widely used food dyes —Red 40, Yellow 5 and Yellow 6 — are known to be contaminated with carcinogens, the Washington-based health watchdog organization said. Evidence suggests, but does not prove, that other dyes — Blue 1, Blue 2, Green 3 and Red 40 — cause cancer in animals, the CSPI report said.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration already recognizes Red 3 as a carcinogen, but the Ronald Reagan administration prevented a ban being placed on Red 3, as required by U.S. law in the case of any food additive known to cause cancer.

About 100,000 kg of Red 3 dye are used annually world wide in processing food.

As of Tuesday, European food manufacturers will be required to add a warning on product packaging if the product contains one of six artificial colors linked to cancer and other health issues.

Hair dyes used by millions of women are linked to chemicals that can cause cancer Secondary amines can be found in hair dyes used by millions of Britons Both home coloring kits and salon dye can contain chemicals Could react with smoke and fumes and form highly poisonous chemicals Hair dyes used by millions of women are linked to chemicals that can cause cancer Secondary amines can be found in hair dyes used by millions of Britons. Both home coloring kits and salon dye can contain chemicals. Could react with smoke and fumes and form highly poisonous chemicals

by Fiona Macrae

Hair dyes used by millions of women contain chemicals linked to cancer, British scientists have warned.

They say that both home hair coloring kits and the dyes used at expensive salons pose a potential risk to health.

Writing in a respected scientific journal, they say chemicals in permanent hair dyes can react with tobacco smoke and other pollutants in the air to form one of the most powerful cancer-causing compounds known to man.

With more than a third of women and one in ten men regularly coloring their hair, the researchers say it is ‘imperative’ that the risk to health is quantified.

However, the cosmetics industry has strongly disputed the claim.

The warning comes from scientists at Leedsbased company Green Chemicals who conducted a review of the chemistry surrounding hair dye. They said that all the information was already available and they simply ‘joined the dots’ to make the link with cancer.

They warn that chemicals called secondary amines, which are either found in all permanent hair dyes or are formed in them, can penetrate the skin and stay on the hair for weeks, months or even years after the dye is applied.

Over time, they could react with tobacco smoke and exhaust fumes, to form highly poisonous chemicals called N-nitrosamines. Known to cause cancer, these are banned from use in cosmetics.

But the Leeds reasearchers argue that they can still be generated via a simple chemical reaction.

Hair dye has previously been linked to a range of cancers, including tumors of the breast, bladder, ovaries and brain and leukemia.

There are also concerns that increasing numbers of people are becoming allergic to their contents, sometimes with fatal results.

The sale of home hair dye kits alone is worth an estimated £321million a year and the figure is expected to rise as the population ages.

Professor David Lewis, one of the authors of the study, and an expert in the chemistry of various dyes, said: ‘At this stage, we can’t be sure of the amount of Nnitrosamines produced or the level of risk these compounds pose but it is clear a potential hazard exists.

‘In the interest of consumer safety, it is imperative that a thorough and independent investigation is conducted to establish the levels of toxicity of these compounds and the potential risks.’

A spokesman for Green Chemicals, which is about to launch its own ‘ultra-safe’ range of hair dyes, said that despite numerous studies of the subject the danger posed by the chemicals in hair dye reacting with the air has been missed or ignored until now.

But manufacturers insisted that the possibility of the chemical reaction has been long known.

Dr Emma Meredith, of the Cosmetic, Toiletry & Perfumery Association, said the law forbids using secondary amines in a form that can react in this way.

George Hammer, the owner of Urban Retreat at Harrods, the world’s largest hair and beauty salon, said: ‘Chemical companies have a huge vested interest in keeping this under wraps.’

The warning is set out in the journal Materials.

In 2009 the Mail revealed that women who use hair dyes more than nine times a year have a 60 per cent greater risk of contracting blood cancer. A year later the European Commission banned 22 hair dyes, which put long term users at risk of bladder cancer.

Why the banking elite wants riots in the United States – Part 2

por Marvin J. Ramirez

Marvin J. RamirezMarvin J. Ramirez

FROM THE EDITOR: The hours following the end the Super Bowl game I was still locked up in my office in the San Francisco Mission District. Earlier that day I had gone to have a late breakfast at a local restaurant on 24th Street.

When I came back to my vehicle I found two cops preparing to tow my car, preparing to take over the streets in anticipation to deter the 49ers masses from expressing their emotions in a violent way. Nobody could park after 12 noon said a sign.

This was despite that the city had decided to start sucking more blood from the working class people who rest on Sundays from a crazy week full of fear of getting $62-tickets for parking in front of their homes. Meters are now enforce on Sundays as well.

The busiest commercial part of the district was practically occupied by police forces with big sticks, ready to break heads of the un-submitting citizens who dare to disobey ‘orders.’

It was around 8:30 p.m. when I decided to go out and find something to eat, that the real occupational show was in effect.

Helicopters engines roared the dark sky, the street from hundreds of block were un-accessible to drivers and public transportation. Security police vehicle with sophisticated communication equipment that looks like armed vehicles used in futuristic wars.

It looked like the elite of the crowd control units of the SFPD and the sheriff were running a drill.

This is a drill I said, in preparation for future riots, that according to social-political scientists, something big will be happen in the near future, like widespread civil unrest, and they are already practicing. What is anticipated is the upcoming of a financial crisis designed by the banking elite to take full control of the population.

With the idea of sharing this fear and anticipating what could happen one of these days, I am sharing the following article, written by Paul Joseph Watson and Alex Jones, two great journalists who have been following events leading to these government preparations and banking takeovers.

Why the banking elite wants riots in America PART 2 of a series of two

Given the clear economic motive for stirring unrest in the United States, we’d expect to see preparations for domestic disorder in numerous different guises – and indeed the signs are everywhere.

National Defense Authorization Act

The Obama administration’s passage of NDAA legislation that authorizes kidnapping and indefinite detention without trial of American citizens on U.S. soil serves to create the framework for mass arrests of protesters and journalists in a time of declared national emergency.

Obama’s War on Whistleblowers

The Obama administration’s brazen and aggressive prosecution of whistleblowers for divulging government corruption in the public interest is clearly a device designed to intimidate whistleblowers from speaking out when the proverbial hits the fan.

Spying on Social Media for Signs of Unrest

The Department of Homeland Security and other federal agencies are actively engaged in spying on social media as well as news websites to look for reports or comments that “reflect adversely on the U.S. government and the DHS.” The government is on the lookout for the ‘tipping point’ when heated online rhetoric spills onto the streets in the form of unrest.

Building Huge Spy Centers to Track Unrest

The NSA is building the country’s biggest spy center in the middle of the Utah desert. The purpose of the data facility is to intercept, “all forms of communication, including the complete contents of private emails, cell phone calls, and Google searches, as well as all sorts of personal data trails—parking receipts, travel itineraries, bookstore purchases, and other digital “pocket litter.”

By creating a gigantic database of every communication imaginable, the NSA hopes to monitor and pre-empt the spread of mass civil unrest in America.

Preparing Drones for Domestic Oppression

Last week, the Justice Department re-affirmed its position that the Obama administration can use armed drones to assassinate Americans. Under the NDAA, the whole of the United States has been declared a “battlefield,” meaning that drones may soon be used to execute American citizens on U.S. soil.

A government that resorts to killing its own citizens without any legal process whatsoever is clearly a dictatorship engaged in domestic oppression. The only imaginable scenario under which this program would be justifiable was if the U.S. was under a state of martial law and the government was on the verge of collapse.

Preparing for Martial Law

The Department of Homeland Security has purchased over 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition in the last 10 months alone. At the height of combat operations in Iraq, the U.S. Army only used 5.5 million bullets a month. Why has the DHS stockpiled enough bullets for a 30 year war if it is not preparing for some form of domestic disorder?

Preparation for martial law can be seen in numerous different guises, but perhaps the most chilling is a nationwide FEMA program which is training pastors and other religious representatives to become secret police enforcers who teach their congregations to “obey the government” in preparation for the implementation of martial law, property and firearm seizures, mass vaccination programs and forced relocation.

Characterizing the American People as the New Target of the War on Terror

The U.S. Army’s Operating Concept 2016-2028 dictates that the military’s “full spectrum operations” will include “operations within American borders.” Scenarios where Americans form into militia groups and become “insurrectionists” as a result of an economic collapse and have to be eliminated by the U.S. Army have already been mapped out by military planners.

A leaked U.S. Army manual also reveals plans for the military to carry out “Civil Disturbance Operations” during which troops will be used domestically to quell riots, confiscate firearms and even kill Americans on U.S. soil during mass civil unrest.

The Department of Homeland Security’s ‘See Something, Say Something’ program habitually portrays middle class Americans as terrorists. In addition, numerous DHS-funded reports have characterized “liberty lovers” and other constitutionalists as domestic terrorists.

Every indication presents us with the inescapable reality that the US government is preparing for mass civil unrest at some point over the next five to ten years. When we look at the recent history of nations that have suffered financial collapse, domestic disorder is clearly a key component of a deliberate agenda on behalf of the banking elite to undermine and loot economies – confiscating national sovereignty in the process.

In Part 2, we’ll explore why the elite, although keen on provoking mass social unrest and even civil war, are destined to lose the battle.

The Libertarian Party response to President Barack Obama’s 2013 State of the Union address

by Carla Howell
Executive Director Libertarian National Committee

Watch the video: http://www.lp.org/libertarian-party-response-to-2013-state-of-the-union-address.

In his State of the Union address, President Barack Obama proposes policies that make things worse for the economy and worse for Americans:

Higher government spending, More dangerously-high government, debt, Continued meddling in needless, costly foreign conflicts, More rules and regulations, Higher taxes, And more assaults on our freedom.

Despite whatever response Republican politicians serve up, their proposals — and their votes — do the same thing: Preserve and grow Big Government.

The Republicans say they want “limited government.” Limited to what? A $3.8 trillion federal budget? A nearly $5 trillion budget?

Look at the Republican budget plan crafted by Congressman Ryan. That’s what Democrats and Republicans are planning to raise spending to over the next 10 years. “Limited?”

Democratic and Republican politicians are planning to raise the debt from today’s $16-and-a-half TRILLION — to over $20 Trillion dollars. “Limited?”

How high does government spending and debt have to be before Democratic and Republican politicians say it’s too much? Will they spend until the economy literally collapses — while workers struggle year after year to find decent jobs?

While retirees are trapped in poverty? And the middle class disappears?

When politicians talk about “limited government,” it’s their way of covering up the fact that they refuse to cut government spending — and that they continually raise spending.

The Libertarian Party says: Stop over-spending. Stop borrowing. NEVER raise the debt ceiling. Balance the budget — not in 10 years. NOW. Just like families and businesses must do every day.

Then keep cutting — until we have a small, constitutional government that is truly limited to protecting our lives, liberty and property — and no more.

Less money for politicians — and more in the productive, private sector — is good for the economy. American workers and taxpayers will have more jobs, higher take-home pay and more savings.

Big Government Democrats and Republicans will try to scare you into believing they’d have to cut essential services. That’s a lie. They’re spending double what Democratic President Bill Clinton spent in the year 2000.

They claim that if they cut spending we’ll have fewer jobs. Another lie. Cutting government spending will create jobs. For every government worker who may get laid off, it will create TWO jobs in the private sector. Cutting government spending will result in a huge net jobs gain. Plenty of jobs for everyone who’s willing to work.

Big Government Democrats and Republicans will keep spending recklessly, raising your taxes, assaulting your liberties and raising government debt — as long as you let them get away with it.

What can you do to stop them?

What you say or write has no effect on the behavior of Big Government politicians.

But how you vote does.

The greatest power you have to stop Big Government — is your vote.

When you sit out the vote, or worse, when you vote for Big Government Democrats or Republicans, it empowers and emboldens them. What do you get? More Big Government.

When you vote small government, you’re changing the game. When you vote for small-government-Libertarian candidates, you’re throwing down the gauntlet. You’re demanding a stop to high taxes, bailouts and obscene government debt. You make small government, low taxes, low government spending, more jobs, and more freedom possible.

Remember when Ma Bell was the only game in town for telephones and telephone service? Cell phone technology had already been invented, yet we were stuck for decades with big, clunky rotary-dialed phones.
When we took away Ma Bell’s government-granted monopoly, we got portable phones, cell phones, smart phones, mobile tablets, and hundreds of new features. Real competition breeds progress.

Democrats and Republicans want a monopoly on elections, just like Ma Bell. They want you to believe your only choice is a Democrat or a Republican who will deliver clunky, wasteful, high-tax, high-debt, war-waging, freedom-fading, job-killing Big Government.

But you have a choice. You can vote Libertarian.

Libertarians say: Stop overspending. End phony stimulus bailouts. Eliminate hundreds of agencies and departments that do more harm than good. Downsize Big Government — now.

Libertarians say: Remove thousands of useless government regulations, so businesses can compete and thrive in a global economy — and create new jobs.

Libertarians say: Federal government central planning of education gives us higher costs, red tape and worse outcomes. We must end government central planning and return control of schools to parents, teachers and local communities.

Libertarians say: Repeal the failed and deadly War on Drugs. Leave people free — so long as they harm no one else. Restore our freedoms while dramatically reducing crime.

Libertarians say: Don’t just oppose the ridiculous anti-gun measures that Obama’s proposing — that Republicans are caving into. Repeal all life-endangering laws on the books that that disarm peaceful, law-abiding citizens so they’re free to stop and prevent violent crime and horrific shooting sprees. That’s how we’ll make our streets and our schools safe. Libertarians say: Repeal and defund Obamacare — now. And, with it, get rid of a boatload of government agencies, laws and regulations that serve to enrich special interests — while driving Americans to bankruptcy. Get government out of the way so health care and medical insurance serve the needs of customers and deliver high-quality care at a fraction of today’s prices and premiums.

Libertarians say: Stop handing out subsidies to foreign dictators. Stop engaging in foreign wars. Ground the 3,000 drones that are flying around spying on Americans. Bring our troops home — out of harm’s way. Cut military spending, and promote peace.

Libertarians say: Cut taxes now. Permanently. Big, bold tax cuts that take money out of the hands of politicians and return it to the men and women who earned it.

The state of the union today is: We’re in trouble. Our economy, our freedoms and our safety are at risk because government is way, way too Big.

Big Government Democrats and Republicans made it this way. We must stop them from growing Big Government more, turn it around, and make it small.

The Libertarian Party and our candidates are working for much smaller government, low taxes, no more debt, peace — and freedom.

Is that what you want?

It’s possible — but only IF you stop voting for Big Government Democrats and Republicans.

And only IF you vote for small government.

The Libertarian Party is the only political party in American that is dedicated to boldly and immediately shrinking Big Government — making it small.

Over 15 million, 750 thousand votes were cast for Libertarian candidates in 2012 — the highest ever.

We’re growing. And we need to grow more. We need your help. Are you ready to act? To take back this country?

Actor Joaquín Cordero from the Golden Age of Mexican cinema dies at age 89

by the El Reportero’s wire services

Joaquín CorderoJoaquín Cordero

Actor Joaquín Cordero died at his home in the Mexican capital, the secretary of the ANDA actors guild told Efe. He was 89.
Cordero was “one of the most beloved people in ANDA,” Amparo Garrido said.

While Garrido did not specify a cause of death, Mexican media suggested the actor fell into a depression after the death seven months ago of his wife, Alma.

Cordero was also recovering from an embolism.

Born Aug. 16, 1923, in the central city of Puebla, Cordero was among the last surviving figures from the Golden Age of Mexican cinema, when he appeared alongside artists such as Mario Moreno “Cantinflas,” Pedro Infante and Carmen Montejo.

Cordero made more than 200 films over seven decades and was later a featured performer in telenovelas, including “Destilando amor,” “Fuego en la Sangre” and “La Madrastra.”

The festival will screen 16 feature films and 8 shorts out of 45 entrees.

According to Chicana from Chicago “Colombia produces less than 25 features a year and that represents a substantial increase over the past 10 years, and 18 home grown features were released in Colombian theaters.”

This event is being held with the support of the Embassy of Colombia in Washington, D.C. and the Consulate of Colombia in NYC.

New York charges man for stealing Dali painting

A 29-year-old man has been indicted for stealing Spanish artist Salvador Dali’s “Cartel de Don Juan Tenorio” from a New York gallery last year, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said.

Phivos Istavrioglou was arrested last Saturday at John F. Kennedy International Airport for taking the $150,000 painting from the Venus Over Manhattan gallery on the Upper East Side on June 19, 2012.

“It was almost surreal how this theft was committed – a thief is accused of putting a valuable Salvador Dali drawing into a shopping bag in the middle of the afternoon, in full view of surveillance cameras,” Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr. said in a statement.

The 1949 work was mailed back to the gallery anonymously from Greece after surveillance images of the suspect were released to the public, the DA’s office said.

“This brazen heist from a Manhattan gallery is the latest in a string of cases involving theft or fraud in the art world that my Office has prosecuted. Today’s indictment brings us one step closer to bringing an international art caper to a close,” Vance said.

Istavrioglou returned to New York at the invitation of a New York Police Department detective posing as an art galery manager.

“I commend detectives for matching a fingerprint in the Dali theft to a shoplifting last year in which Blueprint juice was taken from a Manhattan Whole Foods, resulting in Istavrioglou’s identification,” NYPD Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly said.

Istavrioglou was indicted on one count of second degree grand larceny.
