Millions of people commemorated the life and work of César Chávez around the country, while demanding the creation by Congress of a National Day of the civil right leader.
Born on March 31, 1927, the farm workers chief organizer died in his sleep on April 23, 1993, after several fasts to protest unfair treatment to his fellow workers, which many suggested expedited his death.
A parade in his honor on April 19 brought hundreds on 24th Street in the San Francisco Mission District, where danza Azteca performers officiated their most sacred ceremony in honor to Mr. Chávez.
A festival at César Chávez Middle School was held from 1 -5 p.m.
