Mexican talent never stops surprising us. Proof of this is that a Rarámuri engineer has managed to clean the gray water with cempasúchil flowers and chrysanthemums. She knows how she did it!

The world is at a time when real measures must be taken so as not to end everything that allows us to exist. That is why people from Mexico and from all over the world have been concerned about providing us with options to take care of nature and, of course, water.

However, we have found many alternatives both in the ancient practices of our indigenous peoples –an example is the milpa– and in the innovations that these communities have made in recent years.

Among the efforts mentioned we have Teresa Ramírez, a Rarámuri woman from Bacaboche –a ranch in the Sierra Tarahumara near Creel– who carried out research focused on saving water and maximizing the use of what is spent.

From a very young age, Teresa had a predilection for horticulture. Thanks to this, in the last few years she studied the degree in which she is now an intern: Horticultural Engineer at the Autonomous University of Chihuahua.

Subsequently, Ella Ramírez focused her thesis on cleaning gray water – the one that comes from the shower, dishes, etc. And thanks to the use of the cempasuchil flower and the chrysanthemum, she achieved it in the following way:

“Chrysanthemum and cempasuchil seeds are planted in wetlands, which receive gray water, dripping throughout the day, that water filters into the soil of the plants and comes out clean, which allows it to be used in other activities such as watering plants. , wash the car or do the same cleaning, only it is not suitable for drinking or preparing food ”.

It should be noted that Teresa’s interest is not in making a profit from her project but in having people use it – especially in homes where water is scarce. This is how liquid gold can be reused so that less is wasted.

And you, are you willing to carry out this project?
