Museo De Arte de Ponce celebrates the talents of sculptor Jorge Diaz-Torres with new exhibit

Puerto Rico’s Museo de Arte de Ponce has invited sculptor Jorge Diaz-Torres to present five pieces of work that will ‘create dialogue with the museum’s permanent collection,’ as part of its ‘Arte en Respuesta’ program.

The contemporary art installations by Diaz-Torres is the second installation in this ‘Art in Response’ program and can be viewed through May 23, 2013.

The artist used everyday materials while trying to present why there is so much value on material objects. Uprising Art notes: “In Art in Response, Díaz Torres portrays, in sculpture, urban elements, but outside their usual contexts. He re-positions them in a controlled environment, thereby creating awareness in the spectator of things that ordinarily go unnoticed.

The artist also plays with the perception of what is real and uses his sculpture to stimulate emotions and bring us new ways to look at objects.”

The artist was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico where he lives today.

Diaz-Torres has had three solo exhibitions and numerous group exhibitions all over the world including China. In 2010 he won the Pulse Prize for art. Diaz-Torres employs different materials such as papier mache, ceramic and wood to recreate objects found in an urban setting.
